What role does a proxy server play?

Typically when you browse the internet your computer directly connects to websites. Download the pages for you. It's a process. However with a proxy server in place your computer first sends all web traffic to the server. The proxy then relays your request to the desired website, retrieves the information on your behalf and sends it back to you.

What about VPNs?

However it is important to note that while both VPNs and proxies offer some level of anonymity and access to content VPNs provide comprehensive security and privacy features. This is mainly due to their encryption and tunneling capabilities.
